Miss Unima to fly Malawi's flag at Miss Africa in Nigeria

The reigning Miss University of Malawi (Unima), Vuyiswa Tonono has been shortlisted to represent Malawi at the Miss Africa beauty pageant in Calabar State Nigeria on 17th December 2020 giving the local modelling industry a push and putting Malawi’s model on the map.

The announcement was made through Black Flamingo, a modelling agency that was in charge of the auditions held in Lilongwe in 1st November this year where Vuyiswa was selected out of 11 girls.

According to Black Flamingo's talent manager, Alinafe Chalunda, the pageant is a platform to unite Africa by tackling mindset change on various issues among them Xenophobia.

“It plays a role in uniting Africa by addressing xenophobic mentality and various plights facing the African continent,” she said. 

Chalunda pointed out that unlike other pageants this is a catalyst for change, information exchange and empowerment.

“This pageant is an educational platform and empowering tool to young African women, to be inspiring and informative,” added Chalunda.

Expressing her excitement and gratitude, Tonono said that this was a milestone for her career and for her country.

“I was so happy and grateful to God this a great opportunity.

 “It is a milestone for me and Malawi as I will get a chance to showcase Malawi’s culture,” she added.

Tonono is not only a model but also co-founder of 'She is Ambitous' an organisation that supports girls education and promotes self-esteem among young people.

She was crowned Miss Chanco in 2019 and went on to win the Miss Unima title in the same year.

She will compete against other beauties  from 20 other countries, including Zambia, Nigeria, Zimbabwe, Ghana, Botswana and South Africa.

Tonono is expected to join other girls for boot camp on 15th December. 

Chalunda and Tonono have since called upon people to vote for Vuyiswa to increase her chances of winning through this link https//www.missafrica.tv/.

The voting will officially close on 17th December 2020.The winner will take home a brand-new SUV and US$ 50,000.

Miss Africa Global is a yearly pageant that was founder by Nora Azer and this will be its 5th edition.

This year it has been supported by Nigerian Senator Ben Ayade.
