EU to hosts 2nd Euro Film Festival in Malawi

The European Union, is hosting the second edition of the European Film Festival, on the 7th and 8th of May, 2021. 

The event  launched on Friday 7th of May at 5pm at the EU Residence in Area 10, Lilongwe with Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Eisenhower Mkaka, the EU Delegation to Malawi (Acting Ambassador) Charge d’affaires, Mr Ivo Hoefkens in attendance. 

The Jacaranda Cultural Centre in Blantyre will also be hosting the event on Saturday, 8th of May, for Blantyre film lovers.

The events will showcase some award winning Malawian and European films.

This follows a film workshop held on the 9th of April, 2021, at the EU Residence, in Lilongwe, where over 30 Malawian filmmakers participated, sharing ideas and learning from film making facilitators from Malawi, South Africa, Kenya and the UK. 

Participants were also invited to submit a short film applying the concepts covered in the workshops for an award and a prize. 

The winning film, ‘The Entomologist’ by Malawian filmmakers, Sipho Mhango, Peter Chiluli (AKA Pierre Grey) and Daniel da Trindade, from Cinefilm Creative Studio, will be screened at the festival on Saturday, the 8th of May.

The European Film Festival is a free event and encourages all film patrons to register to secure their space at prior to the screenings in Lilongwe. 

Entrance is open to the public on a first come first serve basis at the Jacaranda Cultural Centre in Blantyre on Saturday 8th of May. All COVID-19 preventative measures will be observed and adhered to. 


In November 2018, the European Commission started a project to support the  creation and enhance  the quality of European Film Festivals organised by the  delegations of the European Union.  

The project is managed by a  consortium formed by  Goethe-Institut, Institut  Français and Cineuropa, the  portal for the promotion of the European cinema. 

The initiative is operational from November 2018 to November 2022. 

To support the Malawian  Film Industry, the EU Malawi hosted the first European Film Festival Malawi in 2019.  

The event is a showcase of Malawian and European films, with a series of workshops between film makers from various backgrounds and experiences to interact and participate at the workshop and festival. 

The last EFF was successfully executed with the attendance of over 700 people, and took place in Lilongwe and  Blantyre,  in 2019.  

The festival showcased 10  Malawian and European films, a series of workshops that brought together Malawian filmmakers and actors for a morning of learning and exchange while festival goers  had the opportunity to interact  with directors Elson Kambalu  and Iara Lee as well as special guest, international actress, Connie Chiume. 

The next edition was meant to take place in 2020 but due to the pandemic, was later postponed to 2021.

The second film workshop took place on the 9th of April, 2021 and was successfully attended by over 30 Malawian Filmmakers, and facilitators from Malawi, South Africa, Kenya and the UK, with a lesson packed webinar from One World Media, and the online presence of South African award winning Film Producer, Batana Vundla, lessons from our Media guru Zilanie Gondwe, Filmmakers Flora Suya and Cinematographer Essim M'bwana.
