Super League of Malawi (SULOM) has announced that the TNM Super League will go on a three week recess in line with the newly gazetted Covid-19 prevention laws.
On Sunday, President Lazarus Chakwera directed the closure of schools and some regulations including the 50 people limit in public gatherings, followed by the gazetting of the COVID-19 laws on Monday.
However SULOM president Tiya Somba-Banda told the Nation Newspaper that the games were to proceed.
But in a new statement released on Tuesday, Sulom general secretary, William Banda said they had to consult the Taskforce to clarify on the gathering restriction and have been told that it also involves athletes.
“Super League of Malawi (SULOM) would like to announce that the TNM Super League will go on a three week recess in order to observe the newly gazetted Covid-19 prevention laws announced by Presidential Task Force on Covid-19.
“This follows the clarification by the Presidential Task Force on Covid-19 that the restrictions of public gatherings to 50 people includes athletes. With the new FIFA five substitutes rule, players are already 20 per team (40) plus seven technical officers (14) thus the total number of teams on the pitch is already at 54 already.
“This excludes match officials, the media, paramedics, stewards and Police. With the new laws in place, it is therefore, impossible to have a match played under minimum requirements as stipulated by world football governing body FIFA” reads the statement.
The league kicked off in November last year instead of March because of the suspension of sports activities by the then president, Peter Mutharika to contain the spread of the virus.
Normally, by this time of the year, the league is on off season break as teams prepare for the new season.
Sulom had already released fixtures for this weekend as six games were lined up.
Chitipa was expected to host Mzuzu Warriors, Mafco was playing against Nyasa Big Bullets and Moyale entertaining Ekwendeni Hammers on Saturday.
According to the schedule, Mighty Tigers FC was to play Ntopwa FC, Silver Strikers hosting TN Stars and biggest match of the week was Blue Eagles hosting Be Forward Wanderers.
Following these developments, Silver Strikers can now be assured of their top spot safe for the next three weeks.
