Over 20 people escaped unhurt in a Matours bus inferno in the wee hours of Thursday in Karonga district.

Karonga police deputy spokesperson, George Mulewa confirmed the incident, saying the Matours bus, registration MN 4386 driven by MCdonald Kumonda, was coming from Lilongwe and reached Karonga at around 4 am.

Mulewa said upon arrival, the driver of the bus noticed there was fire in one of the bus‘s rear tires and he quickly offloaded the passengers and their luggage before driving the bus away from the depot where it completely caught fire.

An eye witness, Chipiliro Mwale, said the fire would have destroyed all the shops in the depot if the driver was not brave enough to drive the bus away from the depot before it completely caught fire.

“We thank the driver for the brevity because he has saved lives of people and property,” said Mulewa.

Meanwhile the wreckage of the bus is still on the scene waiting for police investigations among other formalities to be done.
