The Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) has on Monday started voter registration and verification for the 10th November, 2020 by-elections.
The exercise will run concurrently for 14 days from 14th to 27th September 2020, including Saturdays and Sundays.
The by-elections will be held in Karonga Central, Lilongwe North West, Mangochi West, Mangochi North East, Phalombe North Constituencies and Makhuwira South Ward.
All registration centres will open from 8 am up to 4pm and will remain operational during lunch time.
Chief Elections Officer Sam Alfandika said all those who registered for the May 21, 2019 Tripartite Elections should not go to register again but just go to the centre where they registered to verify their names in the voters’ roll.
Alfandika explained those eligible to register Malawians who have attained the age of 18 and above or will attain the voting age on the last day of voter registration which is 27th September, 2020.
He, however, pointed out those who registered for the Fresh Presidential Election this year need to register again.
"As per section 19 of the Parliamentary and Presidential Elections Act and section 10 of the Local Government Elections Act, a person shall be registered as a voter in the area where he ordinarily resides or was born or is employed or carries on business.
"First time registrants are advised to bring their national IDs or the registration slip they were given by the National Registration Bureau (NRB) as evidence of civil registration. All eligible registrants without the national ID are encouraged to go and register at NRB offices located at their respective council headquarters and designated Post Offices," he said.
During this exercise, there will be no NRB personnel at voter registration centres to register those without national IDs.
The Commission is also advising voters that transfers will not be allowed during the by-elections.
