The Women's Manifesto Movement (WOMAN) has conveyed its heartfelt congratulations to Lazarus Chakwera for being elected Malawi's President and to Saulosi Klaus Chilima for retaining the Vice Presidency following the 23rd June, 2020 Fresh Presidential Elections.

WOMAN says it wishes the two all the success and looks forward to five years of gender-sensitive programming in all sectors of the Malawi society.

The grouping says as the Women's Manifesto Movement is celebrating with them, they have high hopes that there presidency shall address the long standing issues that affect women in leadership in accordance with the Gender Equality Act.

This is contained in a statement signed by the organisation's Maggie Kathewera Banda and Barbara Banda dated 28th June, 2020.

In the statement, WOMAN says it is expecting a Gender inclusive cabinet among other public appointments saying other issues that need their attention include women's and youth's access to education, good quality maternal health services, and accessible agricultural services.

"We are expecting justice in particular, the Msundwe women and girls mass rape committed by state security services," reads the statement in part.

Last year investigations were instituted into the matter but a report from the police is yet to come out and justice has not been served.

During the 2019 campaign period President Chakwera and the Vice President Saulos Chilima  signed a commitment to the Women's Manifesto to ensure women's rights are protected and promoted should they win the election.

The President is yet to announce his cabinet.

In his 2019, 24-member cabinet, former President Peter Mutharika appointed only five women into his cabinet.
