Aero Plastics shut, fined K5 million

The Malawi Environment Protection Authority (MEPA) has closed the premises of plastic manufacturers Aero Plastics Limited, at Chirimba Industrial Area in Blantyre, for producing thin plastics.

This follows an inspection of Aero Plastic on June 7th 2021 a vehicle registration number SA7369 was loaded with thin plastics for trading/commercially distributing thin plastics, contrary to Environment Management (plastics) regulations of 2015.

According to the Acting Director General of MEPA Tawonga Mbale-Luka, apart from the immediate closure of Aero Plastics, the company has been fined K5 million.

The production of plastic below 60 microns is prohibited under section 116 of the Environmental Management Act of 2017.

OG Plastics and City plastics were also shut in June last year for manufacturing thin plastics.
