Lightning has struck to death three people and injured other three in two separate incidents in Malawi's lakeshore district of Mangochi, police confirmed Tuesday.
This, just barely a month after lightning killed four people and injured three at Kasimu Trading Centre in Traditional Authority Chowe in the district on January 30.
Deputy Public Relations Officer for Mangochi Police, Sub-Inspector Amina Tepani-Daudi said the two recent incidents occurred on the evening of Monday, February 22, in traditional authorities Bwananyambi and Mponda.
According to Daudi, two people, identified as John Chicha and Tiyanjane Bakali, both 23, were struck at Masuku Trading Centre while the third person, Bakili Chilembwe, 76, was struck at his maize field in T.A. Mponda.
“It was raining heavily and lightning struck five people at Masuku Trading Centre and two [Chicha and Bakali] were pronounced dead upon arrival at Mulibwanji Community Hospital while the other three were seriously injured,” explained Daudi.
Chilembwe met his fate when he, and his two children, were caught up in the rain while working in their maize field and the three decided to take refuge in an unfinished building.
Chilembwe was rushed to Koche Health Centre where he was pronounced dead upon arrival.
The three, Chicha, Tiyanjane, and Chilembwe, died due to cardiogenic electric shock, according to postmortem results conducted at the aforementioned hospital.
