Seven people, including a driver have died on Monday night after a Freightliner truck registration number KK 8172/KK 4047 swept away pedestrians near Ntcheu Standard Bank along Dedza-Ntcheu M1 road.
According to Sub Inspector Hastings Chigalu Ntcheu police public relations officer, the driver of the truck Matias Mitengo, was coming from the direction of Dedza heading towards Balaka with a passenger on board.
“Upon arrival at the said place at around 20:00 hours, in the process of avoiding unknown motor cyclist who was heading same direction, he lost control of the vehicle.
“He then went to extreme offside where he hit eleven pedestrians and finally overturned” narrated the publicist.
Following the impact, the driver and three passengers sustained different degrees of injuries and were pronounced dead upon arrival at Ntcheu District Hospital.
Out of the eight pedestrians who were receiving medical attention at the district hospital, three have also died.
Police will keep on updating the nation on developments regarding this accident.
Of late, the district has registered many road accidents which according to Chigalu from January to December 2020, 76 people perished out of the 115 accidents.
