Twenty people are reported to have died in 46 fatal road accidents over the New Year long weekend.
The Malawi Police Service (MPS) on Tuesday said the deaths were recorded over 72 hours.
The period spans from between midnight of December 31, 2021 and midnight of 3rd January, 2022.
Assistant National Police spokesperson Felix Misomali, said there was an increase in the fatalities as compared to the same time last year.
"Most of the accidents involved pedestrians and pedal cyclists," he said.
Misomali explained that the New Year holiday in 2021, that run from midnight of 31 December, 2020 to Midnight of 1 January 2021 saw a total of 42 road accidents with seven fatalities recorded.
