In remembrance of the late former First Lady Anne Chidzira Muluzi, there are plans by the family to construct a Cancer ward at one of the central hospitals in the country.

This is contained in a vote of thanks message which appeared in the dailies of 13th January to thank various people for the support rendered to the family during the sickness and demise of Anne, a mother, grandmother, friend, sister and to the nation former First lady.

“In her memory and honour the family has decided to construct a Cancer ward at one of the central hospitals to the specifications and guidance from the Ministry of Health, which will be called The Anne Muluzi Cancer Ward.

"We understand that there are so many people in Malawi suffering from cancer and we intend to contribute to establishing an in-patient facility specifically designed to make cancer patient stay and care as comfortable as possible for the patient and loved ones.

"It will be dedicated to providing a serene environment, an ambience of graceful comfort and care during difficult times. In her loving memory," he added on his Facebook page

The late Anne who was the first woman to be given the title First Lady in democratic Malawi, died on Tuesday 28th December, at Aga Khan Hospital in Nairobi, Kenya, after a long battle with cancer.

Anne, who was Malawi’s first democratically elected President Bakili Muluzi’s spouse before they got divorced in 1999, led a very quiet life and afterwards went to stay in America.

Late President Bingu Wa Mutharika’s wife Ethel, also has a hospital in Lilongwe named after her called Ethel Mutharika Maternity Wing which was opened in 2013.

The 220 bed facility comprising 6 wards, a nursery wing, 11 labour wards, a post natal ward, ante-natal ward and a private fee paying ward (whose funds go towards subsiding the overall facility was opened by Bingu Mutharika.
