One month after terminating the K4.7 billion contract with Techno Brain, the Department of Immigration and Citizenship services is yet to find a new contractor.
The contract which was signed in 2019 was terminated in December last year due to some controversies surrounding it.
Some of the fears were that Techno Bran was demanding money from government’s account number one despite clear guidelines on how the contractor was to be paid.
The Department’s Spokesperson Wellington Chiponde indicated there is an ongoing process of identifying a replacement for Techno Brain.
“We’re still issuing passports, but we have scaled down passport production and currently what we’re doing we’re accommodating and prioritising issuance of emergency passport application so whenever they are compelling reasons of issuing the passport where one is compelled to leave this country for something else elsewhere,” he said.
In a normal arrangement the Department issues about 5000 passports daily.
The termination came in the wake of Tones Alliance’ unfulfilled promise of citizens obtaining passports at a reduced price of K14, 000 made during the campaign trail.
