Man fined K20,000 for Marijuana possession
Senior Resident Magistrate Court in Mulanje on Monday fined two men for being found in possession of Indian hemp locally called chamba without a permit. The two are Mike Potani 38, and Enock Misolo 26, who were arrested last week for possessing 64.2 kilograms and 776 grams of the illicit drug respectively. Mulanje Police Station Public Relations Officer, Gresham Ngwira said in an interview on Tuesday that the two appeared in court where they both pleaded guilty to their charges. “Appearing before Magistrate Shaheeda Hanif Bakili they were both found guilty and in mitigation they asked for leniency saying they have family responsibilities,” said Ngwira. However, Magistrate Bakili said the offence the two were answering was serious considering that chamba was prohibited.Magistrate Bakili ordered Potani to pay K80,000 fine or in default serve one year jail sentence while Misolo was ordered to pay K20,000 fine or in default serve a six month jail sentence.
Mob torches suspected cattle rustler in Salima
An angry Mob in Salima on Tuesday torched a man to death after suspecting him of stealing six heads of cattle. The man, aged 32, was identified as Beston Mkumpha from Sengamkamwini village in the area of Traditional Authority (T/A) Karonga in the district. Spokesperson for Salima police Jackob Khembo said: "The suspect is said to have stolen the cattle from the area of T/A Kuluunda and after he was caught he failed to explain the whereabouts of the cattle and that led to him being beaten and torched." Khembo asked communities in the district to desist from taking the law into their own hands by administering justice on their own.
70-year-old man arrested for operating medical clinic illegally
Mwanza Police Station on Monday arrested Sankhani Waya, 70, for operating a medical clinic without licence at Kamwendo Village in the area of Senior Chief Nthache in the district. Mwanza Police Station Public Relations Officer Edwin Kaunda Waya was arrested after being found with assorted types of drugs and medical equipment at his 'clinic' but he failed to produce any documentation. He will appear in court soon to answer charges of practicing as a medical doctor without legal documents, illegal possession of hospital equipment suspected to have been stolen from a government hospital and operating medical clinic without licence. Waya comes from Kamwendo Village in the area of Senior Chief Nthache in Mwanza.
Man commits suicide after suspecting girlfriend of cheating
A 25-year-old man of Dowa committed suicide on Monday by taking pesticides after suspecting that his girlfriend was going out with other men. Spokesperson for Dowa police, Sub Inspector Gladson M’bumpha identified the deceased as Chikondi Chikwezeka from Kapalamula village in the area of Traditional Authority (T/A) Ganya in Ntcheu. “He quarreled with her after suspecting that she was going out with other men. He then took unknown pesticides on Monday and eventually went to his girlfriend's house and told her to prepare porridge or else he would die. However, he collapsed and was taken to Chankhungu Health Centre and was later referred to Dowa District Hospital where he died while receiving treatment,” said M’bumpha. Postmortem examination conducted at Dowa District Hospital revealed that death was due to poisoning.
