Police in Mulanje have arrested a woman for stealing a baby after disguising herself as a good Samaritan.
The incident took place on Monday February 10 at Mulanje District Hospital.
Police spokesperson Gresham Ngwira has said the suspect, Dorothy Mponda, approached the mother, 16 year old Rhoda Charles, saying her guardian who was collecting medication at the pharmacy had asked her to bring them the baby.
Convinced, Charles surrendered the baby and the suspect left on the pretext of going to the pharmacy.
Ngwira said when the guardian reported back and enquired about the baby, Charles got surprised but the suspect had left the facility to an unknown destination.
The issue was reported at Mulanje Police Station where they instituted investigations and through tip offs, led to the arrest of the suspect and recovery of the baby.
Charles, hails from Villa-Milanje in Mozambique and was referred to the facility from Mpala Health Centre where she went for a maternity case.
Dorothy Mponda, 30 comes from Bango village, Senior Chief Mabuka in Mulanje. She will appear in court soon to answer a charge of a abducting a child.
