Alex Mawaya

Malawi Police have on Monday arrested Alex Mawaya on allegations he beat up and injured opposition Democratic Progressive Party senior members at a press briefing.

The incident happened on Friday when the said members; Francis Mphepo, Brown Mpinganjira and Chimwemwe Chipungu were holding a press briefing in Lilongwe.

Mpinganjira called it an act of stupidity.

Lilongwe Police spokesperson Joseph Kachikho said Mawaya will appear in court on Tuesday.

Kachikho says police are still searching for another suspect.

Chipungu during a subsequent follow-up briefing said the party could not disclose who was behind the attack.

Caught on camera Mpinganjira was seen being smack at the nape as the briefing was brought to an impromptu halt.

Mawaya and others could be heard telling the three the briefing was over to a visibly perplexed Mpinganjira and company including the media.

Mphepo was also captured frightened as he was being beaten up and left the room amid panic.
