A witch doctor in Lilongwe has been sentenced and convicted to four years imprisonment for robbing a secondary school teacher.

The Senior Resident Magistrate's court sitting at Mkukula on Monday, July 26, passed the sentenced to James Banda 36, in Lumbadzi.

Lumbadzi Police prosecutor, Aufi Ali told the court that at around 4pm on 28 December, 2020, Banda and his friends robbed Caroline Kamwera, a teacher at Chinkhuti Community Day Secondary School of her cellphone along the Kamuzu International Airport road near Lumbadzi Police Station.

Ali explained that Banda also ordered Kamwera to surrender her money or be turned into an anti hill.

The traditional doctor pleaded not guilty for the charge of robbery, prompting the state to parade three witnesses who testified against him.

In submission, Ali asked the court to impose a stiffer custodial sentence considering that cases of robbery are on the rise in the Lumbadzi area.

In his mitigation, Banda asked for the court's leniency considering that he is the breadwinner of four children and he looks after his mother.

When passing sentence, Senior Resident Magistrate Cecilia Onsewa concurred with the state and sentenced Banda to four years imprisonment with hard labour.

Banda hails from Namangwiya village, Traditional Authority Chikowi in Zomba.
