Gang kills ranger at Liwonde National Park

A gang has assaulted to death a game ranger from Liwonde National Park in Machinga while on duty.

Director of Parks and Wildlife Kumchedwa announced the death of the ranger, Given Gondwe at Ntaja area.

Park manager for Nkhotakota Wildlife Reserve, Sam Kamoto confirmed in a separate interview saying Gondwe was part of the law enforcement team that was in an operation to recover a Rhinoceros horn in the area.

“I confirm that it has happened, the matter is being investigated to arrest those responsible so that they can face the law,” Kamoto said.

The Rhinoceros which is a protected species under the Parks and Wildlife Act was poached inside the park some two weeks ago.

While in the operation, Gondwe was apprehended by members of a local gang that assaulted him to death.  

Two weeks ago a mob also destroyed solar powered fence equipment like panels, batteries and inverters costing millions of Kwachas at Masanje Camp on the Eastern part of the Park.

Meanwhile, the Department is making preparations to send his remains to his home district, Chitipa.
