High Court unconditionally frees DPP’s Rev. Ngwira

Reverend Christopher Mzomera Ngwira

The High Court in Mzuzu has unconditionally released former Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) Regional Governor for the north Reverend Christopher Mzomera Ngwira due to ill-health.

High Court judge Justice Chimwemwe Kamowa on Monday observed that the DPP guru already spent a considerable time in jail and looking at the nature of the case, it was only fair to release him but he still remains a convict.

He was convicted in 2021 and sentenced to serve a four-year jail term for abuse of K250, 000 in local development funds when he was a Member of Parliament for Mzimba Hora.

Before his conviction and as he was being pursued by the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB), the embattled legislator returned the money.

After his sentencing when Ngwira was sent to Mzimba prison to serve his jail term, he was constantly in poor health which saw him frequently admitted to Mzimba and Mzuzu hospitals.

Through his lawyer Criston Ng’ambi, he appealed against his sentence and conviction on grounds of ill-health coupled with the fact that he showed remorse by returning the money he was accused to have abused.

Following the development, Ng’ambi indicated he is satisfied with the judgment which will see his client having ample time to attend to his health.
