Isaac Kaneka

A 36-year-old Rwandese business woman, Janet Musabyimana died after a motor vehicle driven by Blantyre West parliamentarian, Jason Isaac Kaneka hit her at Likala Village along the Arthur Peter Mutharika Highway in Mangochi on Sunday.

Mangochi Police Station Public Relations Officer, Sub Inspector Amina Tepani Daudi disclosed that the accident which involved a Toyota Hillux, registration number BU 8633 driven by Kaneka, 56, was going towards Mangochi Boma from the direction of Liwonde.

Daudi claims that at Likala village, Kaneka lost control of his vehicle due to alleged over speeding such that it swerved to a nearside of the road where it hit six people including Musabyimana who were chatting on the edge of the road.

Musabyimana sustained severe head injuries and was rushed to Mangochi District Hospital where she died while receiving treatment as other people sustained minor injuries and were treated as out patients at the same facility, according to Daudi.

Daudi said Kaneka is expected to appear before court soon to answer charges of causing death due to reckless driving contrary to Section 126 (C) of the Road Traffic Act.

Meanwhile, the police in Mangochi is advising motorists to abide by all road safety measures to avoid road accidents and also appeal to people to avoid lingering along the Arthur Peter Mutharika Highway.
