Patients, nurses and residents of Balaka Township woke up to a devastating news that fire had gutted down part of the district's hospital in the wee hours of Friday.
The areas which have been heavily affected are the kitchen, laundry, store room and data office.
Director of Health and Social Services for Balaka District Health Office (DHO), Dr Eugine Katenga Kaunda said the fire started in the kitchen but there is was any casualties.
Kaunda said that the hospital is planning to transfer patients to Machinga or Ntcheu District Hospitals.
Meanwhile the cause of the fire has not yet been established.
Balaka, Mangochi, Ntcheu and Machinga district councils have no fire fighting machines and depend on the one from by Zomba.
