Hygiene practices vital to prevent Corona virus outbreak

Chief of Health Services in Ministry of Health and Population, Dr. Charles Mwansambo has advised the public to observe hygiene practices in order to prevent the outbreak of Corona virus (COVID-19) disease which has hit China and other countries.

He made the remarks on Friday in Lilongwe during media orientation meeting on Corona virus outbreak.

The Chief said that there was need for the public to follow hygiene measures as one way of preventing the epidemic from hitting in the country.

“People should maintain high levels of hygiene such as; washing their hands with soap after visiting the toilet and also should avoid touching their nose and eyes with unwashed hands in order to prevent the outbreak of Coronavirus disease which is currently spreading in China,” Mwansambo said.

He assured the public that currently his Ministry has not received any reports concerning COVID-19 disease in the country.

Mwansambo added the Ministry of Health has engaged the Department of Civil Aviation which has put quarantine teams at Kamuzu International Airport (KIA) and Chileka International Airport.

“We are working together with our friends from Civil Aviation and we have put quarantine teams in all our airports.

“Currently, 62 people are in self quarantine and they are being monitored after they traveled into the country from China, Out of these 62 people, 52 are based in Lilongwe and 10 in Blantyre,” he disclosed.

In his statement during press briefing at Chinese Embassy in Lilongwe, Chinese Ambassador to Malawi, Liu Hongyang said that his Embassy was committed to collaborating with the Government in preventing the outbreak of COVID-19 disease in the country.

Africa has reported one case of COVID-19 disease in Egypt, according to World Health Organisation (WHO).
