Leader of the Malawi's main opposition Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) in Parliament, Kondwani Nankhumwa has distanced himself from a social media account on Facebook under his name.
The Facebook account purporting to be Nankhumwa's personal account bears his name and photos but is allegedly run by some unscrupulous individuals.
"These misguided people are using this account to dupe unsuspecting job seekers and other people seeking help."
Nankhumwa said the matter has been reported to police but advised the public is to guard against such people and always exercise caution whenever they receive a friend request from the said Facebook account.
"Please note that I am on Facebook where, through my page, I share some important information with the public but I don’t send friend requests as people simply like my page and currently the page has over 36,000 likes.
"I'm therefore advising Facebook users to disregard any requests or communication from such account and refrain from sharing any personal information with the said accounts," Nankhumwa said.
Unscrupulous people have taken advantage of the unverified status of most social media accounts of Malawians celebrities and public figures to con the unsuspecting.
Last year, a Twitter page purported to be of Malawi's President Lazarus Chakwera also caused a stir on the social media platform as it showed Chakwera supporting ZimbabweLivesMatter which opposed sitting president Emerson Mnangagwa
