Basketball Association of Malawi (Basmal) and Volleyball Association of Malawi (VAM) have said they are waiting for Ministry of Sports to direct them on the way forward to resume games.
Malawi National Council of Sports (MNCS) suspended all games and trainings as preventive measure to Coronavirus (COVID-19).
Recently Football Association of Malawi (FAM) initiated processes to engage government to have the sport return by producing a roadmap for safe resumption.
But in an interview, VAM general secretary, Jairos Nkhoma said they have received a notice from their international governing body, Federation Internationale de Volleyball (FIVB) on the return of the sport activities soon but cannot re-start without government’s directive.
“There is nothing we're doing for now because we are following the direction that was given to us. As soon as they inform us what to do, we will start the preparation processes,” he said.
Basmal vice president, Banthari Banda echoed Nkhoma’s statement, but added that they are working on identifying young players earmarked for the 3 on 3 tournament.
“We have to participate in this year’s 3 on 3 tournament in December and it was important that we identify the players from the zones as plan to conduct the national tournament later in September so that we can have the final list to represent the country in Bulawayo,” he said.
Banda said once the government communicates on the need to restart the games, they will first work on conducting zonal elections.
The elections were cancelled due to the COVID-19 scare.
