Ex-football player killed in Blantyre

Gomezgani Gondwe

Former Malawi national under 20 team and Be Forward Wanderers player Gomezgani Gondwe has been killed in Machinjiri, Blantyre in the wee hours of Thursday.

By Thursday morning news was everywhere about Gondwe’s demise with people suggesting he was murdered, while other reports indicated he was hit by a car as he was jogging.

Member of Parliament for Blantyre City East, John Bande narrates in a voicenote to one of the social groups that he visited the scene of the accident with the police who suggests it was a case of hit and run.

“This is John Bande, most of us have heard the news about the death of Gome. I was with the Police at Our Lady they came with the CID and other senior officials because they received the news about his death. Some people were saying he was hacked, but he was hit by a car because his head has crack and there were some pieces of glasses from the car’s headlamp. The police are yet to meet the family on the issue. Thanks,” Bande said.

Limbe Police Spokesperson, Patrick Musa could not be reached for confirmation on the matter.

Gondwe also played for ESCOM Reserves and was at some point in Swaziland where he was plying his trade.
