The Malawi national football team have earned themselves a chance to dine with President, Lazarus Chakwera following their third qualification to the Africa Cup of Nations.

Malawi beat Uganda 1-0 at their backyard to qualify for the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations to be played in Cameroon.

According to statement from the presidential press secretary, Brian Banda, the president will host the team in the coming days.

“His Excellency Dr. Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera, sends his congratulations to the Malawi National Football Team, the Flames, for their victory against Uganda and for qualifying for the Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon. The President and the First Lady, Madam Monica Chakwera, wish the Flames every success in their subsequent games…,” reads the statement.

Meanwhile, Football Association of Malawi (FAM) president, Walter Nyamilandu says they are also planning on rewarding the players for the good job.

“The boys deserve some reward. As FAM, we will sit down and agree on how to go about with it. It was not an easy fight. We have seen countries with rich football history failing to qualify but we managed,” Nyamilandu said.

On Tuesday, the players had breakfast with the Minister of Sports, Ulemu Msungama at Golden Peacock Hotel in Blantyre before a victory parade in the city.

Several companies including FDH Bank, CORI and individual fans made pledges to the team if they win the match.
