The Malawi national football team failed to live up to their expectation of finishing the 2022 World Cup qualifiers with a win after going down 1-0 to Mozambique in Benin on Tuesday.
Goalkeeping consistency saw to the Flames coach trust Enerst Kakhobwe on the sticks resting Brighton Munthali who was in charge of the Cameroon 4-0 game last Friday.
Apart from Kakhobwe, the mentor also made some changes to the Cameroon squad giving a chance to Gomezgani Chirwa, Mike Mkwate, and Tawonga Chimodzi in the starting eleven.
While it seemed as a balanced affair for the two sides, Malawi's captain, Limbikani Mzava gifted the Mozambicans an own goal at the 51st minute.
This was Mozambique's revenge of the loss they suffered at the hands of Malawi with the same score margin courtesy of Richard Mbulu.
The result means Malawi have finished at the bottom of Group D which is led by Ivory Coast followed by Cameroon.
The two sides were by Tuesday evening playing against each other fighting for superiority as Mozambique and Malawi are far from contention.
Mozambique now have four points, while Malawi finished with a point less.
