Sulom done with vote counting for Player of the Season

After the rigourous process of voting for the Player of the Season Award winner, Super League of Malawi (Sulom) president, Tiya Somba Banda has said they are done with the counting of the votes.

Sulom nominated four players, Chimwemwe Idana of Nyasa Big Bullets, Vitumbiko Kumwenda of Mighty Wanderers, Blessings Tembo of Silver Strikers, and Moyale's Lloyd Njaliwa after votes from the media, coaches and captains.

They then gave the chance to the supporters to also  cast theirs, which contributed to 15% of the votes.

But since the process was closed on November 10, fans have been asking to know the progress of the process and when the results will be announced.

According to Banda, in his interview with Timveni radio, the process is done and they are waiting for the sponsors to set the date for the individual awards.

The Sulom president said the Player of the Season Award, which is a Mazda Demio worth K3.5 million, will not be presented in isolation.

"It is a ceremony for awarding all individuals including the Mazda Demio. So far all the processes have been concluded. We just urge the supporters to remain calm since the name of the winner will be unveiled at the ceremony," he said.

For the first time in the history of elite league in the country, the Player of the Season will walk away with a car.

While others applauded the idea saying players needed to see value in their talent, some people argued that the prize should have been introduced at the beginning of the season, not while in progress.

The 2020-2021 season has been the longest, running from November 2020 to December this year due to COVID-19 breaks within.
