When everyone doubted his capabilities the moment news spread that Charles Thom, 23, would be manning the Malawi national team goals, the boy proved naysayers wrong.

The Silver Strikers goalkeeper performed wonders, saving shots that could have turned into goals, no wonder he earned himself a Man-of-the-Match accolade at the end of the game against Senegal.

This was his debut appearance for the Flames in an international match, and he delivered.

In his reaction to the performance, Thom said he feels good, especially after playing a team with top players that play in European Leagues.

“It’s a good feeling, I thank God that I performed that way. We all knew how important that match was to use. Personally, managing to deny top players like Sadio Mane to score past me is a good feeling which I cherish.

“Going forward we still have a chance, and we can do great things through hardwork and dedication just as we did with other games,” said the former Dwangwa United goalkeeper.

Malawi Head of Technical Panel, Mario Marinica also praised Thom, saying he impressed together with Civo United’d defender, Lawrence Chaziya.

“The boys were fantastic, determination and resilience have always been in them. Senegal match was difficult, we told the boys that we need to attack, and they delivered. We got a draw, a very well-deserved draw.

“It’s fabulous to see how Thom performed. Sometimes people question my selection, but Thom, 23 years old performed massively. He has made the country proud today,” he said.

Meanwhile, two local companies, Hills and Associates, and SULDEC have given Thom a plot each in Lilongwe.

The former is the same that gave Gabadinho Mhango a plot after his outstanding performance that saw him score twice in the match against Zimbabwe.

Sparks Systems that pledged to give Thom K1 million has since deposited the money into Thom's account.
