After getting praises from their previous group matches at the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), the Malawi national football team have been handed a chance to occupy a slot in the knockout stages to meet Morocco.

The Flames were waiting to know their fate in the continental competition’s knockout stages as best losers after finishing third in Group B which has Senegal and Guinea who qualified.

Egypt and Nigerian gave Malawi the chance to proceed to the knockout stages following their victories in Group D.

Cape Verde from Group A leads the best losers table with four points, followed by Malawi representing Group B with the same points.

Comoros have three points but may be displaced following outcome of the two remaining games between Ivory Coast and Algeria, and also Equatorial Guinea and Sierra Leone.

Whatever outcome will no have any impact on Flames’ place in the last 16.

This is Malawi’s first time to reach the stage from their three times appearance at the competition.

Reacting to the news, Football Association of Malawi (FAM) president, Walter Nyamilandu posted on twitter: “Bravo Malawi for qualifying to the knockout stages. The Flames have broken the record and rewritten the history books. This is a dedication to the soccer loving Malawians who have been patient for a long time. Credit to the players and coaches for turning around our fortunes.”

The Flames kicked off the competition on a low, going down 1-0 to Guinea before they defeated fellow Cosafa representatives, Zimbabwe 2-1.

Malawi then held Africa’s heavyweights, Senegal to a goalless draw.
