The Malawi national netball and women football teams’ star Towera Vinkhumbo has left the country to England to join a netball Super League outfit Severn Stars.
Vinkhumbo-Nyirenda was signed by Stars towards the end of last year owing to her performance at the Netball World Cup in England.
She departed the country on Wednesday through Kamuzu International Airport in Lilongwe and was seen off by the netball director in the Ministry of Youth Sports and Culture, Mary Waya and family members.
Seven Stars announced in November the signing of Vinkhumbo, with coach Mellisa Bessel describing her experience to help the team to strengthen the defense.
“Towera has a huge amount of experience internationally. She is a very tenacious player and has a wise head on her shoulders, which is something I love in defence. It sealed the deal for me after Malawi took the silver medal at the Africa Netball Cup. Towera played a vital part in two crucial games so it was a no brainer for me to bring her to Stars,” Bessel said after signing Vinkhumbo.
Most coaches including the current Queens mentor, Peace Chawinga-Kalua prefer using the towering star in goal-keeping and goal-defending.
She also plays as a defender for the national women football team.
The former Kukoma Diamonds Star joins other three prolific colleagues overseas, Joyce Mvula and Laureen Ngwira who play at Manchester Thunder and Mwawi Kumwenda for Melbourne Vixens.
Seven Stars start their pre-season friendly games against Surrey Storm at University of Gloucestershire Arena on January 25.
