Northern Region Volleyball League (NRVL) has said they are targeting to start the competition earlier in June this year.
This follows the sponsorship assurance from former Volleyball Association of Malawi (VAM) president Jappie Mtuwa Mhango.
Mhango as a sole sponsor made the announcement recently through VAM president, James Kaunda, that he will continue to support NRVL with K2 million as a way of promoting the game in the region.
According to Kaunda, Mhango expects fruits that will put volleyball on the map and encourage other youth to participate in the sport.
NRVL vice general secretary, Chifundo Zingunde said they believe the financial support is a sign of trust in the executive and will ensure that volleyball is developed to best standards.
“We'll follow the VAM calendar. Registration of teams and players is already in process. We were unable to plan earlier because we were clueless as to where we were going to get the sponsorship. Now with Mhango’s assurance, we have started running up and down.
“This year we want to be different, so we are trying to incorporate unique features by incorporating considerations of the teams like Chibavi on travelling distances. For instance, Chibavi playing in Mzimba. To address this, we want to start playing in zones which will produce champions to compete at the regional finals.
“We are also encouraging teams from Likoma, Chilumba to consider taking part. This will give a chance to teams in the districts like Mzimba South, North, Rumphi to have a test of the league in their respective districts,” he said.
Katoto Queens emerged champions of the Jappie Mhango Northern Region Volleyball League last year in ladies category, while Moyale Volleyball team were champions in the men’s slot.
