Pictorial: Ugly side of anti-Ansah demos

Burning Accountant General Offices in Mzuzu

Thursday's anti-Ansah demonstrations led by UTM and Malawi Congress Party (MCP) Presidents Saulos Chilima and Lazarus Chakwera, reared its ugly side when looting and destruction became the order of the day in some parts of the country.

Some properties were smashed and looted following the protest marches whose objective is to force current Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) Chairperson Jane Ansah to relinquish her position.

Organisers of the march Human Rights Defenders Coalition (HRDC), have since distanced themselves from the violence and looting arguing that some elements haven taken advantage of the protests to destroy and steal.

On its part government through Information  Minister Mark Botomani, has vowed to crackdown on those behind the looting.

We bring you some highlights of the ugly side of the event in this pictorial courtesy of social media.
