Set for 15 December
Mlawi Electoral Commission (MEC), on Friday announced dates for the by elections in Phalombe North, Mangochi West and Mangochi North West constituencies.
Chairperson of the Commission Justice Chifundo Kachale told the media in Lilongwe the polls will be held on 15th December this year.
"As a law requirement campaign period will close on the 13th December at 6am," said Kachale.
Two contestants have withdrawn from the race, these are Anna Kachiko( who won in Phalombe North in the 2019 elections) and Patrick Million.
Seven contestants will compete in Mangochi West. They are Gomani Banda, Reuben Kanyama, Joyce Chikumba, Simeon Harrison (UTM), Stanley Phiri, Beatrice Njalonje and Geoffrey Chiondo (MCP).
In Mangochi North East, Martin Nyengo an independent will battle it out with Duncan Kassim of UTM Party and Idi Carlos of UDF.
In Phalombe North, Esther Kazembe of MCP will tussle with Justin Mokowa of UTM and Mabvuto Bokosi and Promise Salima (independents).
A total of 27,190 voters have been registered in Mangochi West, 31,501 in Mangochi North East and 28,670 in Phalombe North.
Unlike the recently held by elections, the court nullified the 2019 results of all the three areas in the December 2015 slated by elections.
The High Court in Blantyre ruled against MEC’s decision to conduct fresh registration of voters in constituencies whose 2019 election results were nullified over irregularities.
The court also ordered that only candidates who competed in the 2019 parliamentary race in the affected constituencies should take part in the fresh polls.
This means that the commission will disqualify all candidates that have already presented nominations papers but did not compete during the 2019 elections in Phalombe North, Mangochi West and Mangochi North East constituencies.
The decision by the court follows an injunction which was obtained by independent candidate for Mangochi North East Constituency Martin Nyengo through lawyer Chimwemwe Kalua stopping MEC from registering new members until the court interprets if it was necessary to do so.
